Football for football’s sake and a few games worth staying in for
AFI’s weekly guide to free college football returns with five intriguing matchups for Saturday, October 17. This week’s selections feature a heated Pennsylvania rivalry, two nationally ranked junior college teams riding winning streaks and a pair of homecoming games with plenty at stake. All five are available to watch without a subscription.
We have had enough games that were effectively finished before halftime. This week, the search is for a fourth quarter worth watching. Rivalries help. So do opponents with comparable records and a recent habit of making their supporters nervous.
The idea behind this weekly roundup remains simple. There is plenty of college football beyond the television deals and NIL headlines, much of it closer to the game we know outside North America. It is also free to watch. Leave the billion-dollar football for Sundays and give these guys a look. Club coaches are, of course, welcome to call it scouting.
All five games are on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Kickoffs are European time, CEST. The selections cover JUCO, NAIA, Division III, Division II and FCS.
Slippery Rock at IUP — NCAA Division II
20:00 CEST | Slippery Rock 6–0; IUP 5–1
Watch free: PSAC Sports Digital Network — Slippery Rock at IUP.
If you only open one stream, start here. The last two meetings were decided by a combined four points. Slippery Rock has won three straight in the series, and IUP would dearly like to stop hearing about it.
The unbeaten Rock arrives ranked inside the national top ten. IUP is also nationally ranked but needs a response after its first loss, at Lock Haven, where five turnovers handed the opposition far too much help. This is a PSAC West rivalry with real postseason weight, rather than a famous name collecting another comfortable win.
Why watch: Can IUP clean up the mistakes against a defense that has already forced ten turnovers? That is the contest within the contest. The Crimson Hawks’ preview gives plenty of reason to expect an argument all afternoon.
Dodge City at Butler — JUCO
20:00 CEST | No. 11 Dodge City 5–2; No. 13 Butler 4–2
Watch free: Butler Creative TV — official live broadcasts. Select Dodge City at Butler.
Two ranked teams, seven consecutive wins between them and neither with much room for another loss. Dodge City has won four straight, including a 28–21 victory over NEO. Butler has won three straight and escaped Coffeyville 29–28 last weekend, scoring the winning touchdown with 1:52 remaining.
Why watch: Three of Butler’s four wins have come by six points or fewer. Dodge City has already survived one-point and seven-point finishes during its current run. These teams know how to make the closing minutes interesting.
There is an international angle too. Dodge City’s 2026 roster includes defensive lineman Xavier Fauonuku from Melbourne and linebacker Carsen Patu from Australia’s Gold Coast. A useful reminder that the Australian route into college football extends beyond the punters. Butler is also celebrating its centennial, so there should be some occasion to go with the football.
Wabash at John Carroll — NCAA Division III
19:05 CEST | Wabash 4–1; John Carroll 4–1
Watch free: John Carroll’s official live video. The university confirms its home broadcasts remain free, including televised games.
Two 4–1 teams coming off a bye, both with a loss to get out of their systems. Wabash fell 24–23 to Denison in its last outing. John Carroll lost 35–25 at Washington University in St. Louis after winning its first four.
There is a useful common opponent here: Wabash beat Wittenberg 31–0; John Carroll beat Wittenberg 49–3. Both have shown they can overwhelm weaker opposition. Saturday should tell us considerably more about them.
Why watch: This is a much better test than another contender against a team simply trying to survive. John Carroll has homecoming at Don Shula Stadium; Wabash brings the chance to spoil it. Start here at 19:05, then see which of the 20:00 games earns your second screen.
MidAmerica Nazarene at Benedictine — NAIA
20:00 CEST | MidAmerica Nazarene 5–2; Benedictine 6–1
Watch free: Benedictine on Urban Edge Network. Select the MidAmerica Nazarene game. UEN is free, with no subscription or trial required.
Benedictine has won six straight since its opening loss to Morningside, but the Ravens have had to work for some of them. They edged Grand View 21–17 and Baker 34–32. MidAmerica Nazarene arrives with consecutive wins, most recently 31–17 over Missouri Baptist.
Why watch: This is the upset bid in the selection. Benedictine deserves to be favored, especially after beating Central Methodist 52–14 a week after MNU scraped past the same opponent 29–24. But a 5–2 visitor has rather more to offer than a sacrificial homecoming opponent. If the Pioneers can keep this within one score into the second half, the Heart South race gets interesting.
Alabama State at Arkansas–Pine Bluff — FCS
21:00 CEST | Alabama State 3–3; Arkansas–Pine Bluff 3–2
Watch free: SWAC TV — Alabama State at Arkansas–Pine Bluff. The conference’s official platform carries the game free.
Pine Bluff’s homecoming supplies the occasion, and recent results supply the intrigue. The Golden Lions won 41–10 at Southern in their last game. Alabama State has lost its last two by a combined seven points: 16–10 at Bethune-Cookman and 28–27 to Florida A&M.
Why watch: One team arrives rested after an emphatic win; the other needs to turn narrow defeats into something useful. Pine Bluff has also been on the wrong end of a 53–51 game against Alcorn State this season, so there is no shortage of entertainment potential.
For readers still getting acquainted with football at America’s historically Black colleges and universities, a SWAC homecoming is a good place to start. Give the halftime broadcast a chance too, if it stays with the bands.
Five games, no subscription bill. The Pennsylvania rivalry and the JUCO matchup are my strongest picks for a close finish. The rest have a chance to make us glad we opened the stream. And somewhere in there might be an import worth keeping an eye on.
