Japan: Panasonic Impulse look to clinch Rice Bowl playoff berth against All Mitsubishi Lions
The Panasonic Impulse (6–2) will look to secure a berth in the X League Premier Rice Bowl Tournament when they face the visiting All Mitsubishi Lions (2–4) on Friday, October 16, at Expo ’70 Commemorative Stadium in Osaka.
Riding a six-game winning streak, Panasonic enters the matchup as one of the league’s hottest teams. However, the Lions demonstrated in their previous outing that they are capable of challenging the league’s elite, pushing the Fujitsu Frontiers to the limit in a narrow 28–24 defeat.
Panasonic defense faces tough ground test
The most intriguing matchup could come in the trenches, where All Mitsubishi’s third-ranked rushing attack faces one of the league’s stingiest run defenses.
The Lions average 113.3 rushing yards per game, while the Impulse surrender just 45.0 yards on the ground. Establishing the run will be critical for All Mitsubishi, both to sustain drives and to keep Panasonic’s offense off the field.
The Impulse demonstrated their defensive strength last week, shutting out the Nojima Sagamihara Rise 24–0 while limiting them to just 105 total yards, including 18 passing yards.
Special teams could provide a spark
All Mitsubishi also possesses a dangerous return game, having scored two kickoff return touchdowns against Fujitsu in the previous round.
Those explosive plays could prove essential against a Panasonic defense that rarely gives opponents easy scoring opportunities.
Offensively, the Impulse have been particularly effective at extending possessions, converting 48.2% of their third-down opportunities, the second-best rate in the league.
With the Lions allowing an average of 215.8 passing yards per game, Panasonic will look to exploit opportunities through the air while maintaining its offensive balance.
Playoff implications
A victory would guarantee Panasonic a place in the Rice Bowl Tournament and extend its impressive winning streak to seven games.
For All Mitsubishi, an upset would provide a major boost to its postseason hopes and reward a team that came agonizingly close to knocking off Fujitsu.
