Hildesheim Invaders dominate Allgäu Comets in German Football League season opener
The Hildesheim Invaders (1-0) made a powerful statement in their effect ENERGY German Football League season opener, crushing the Allgäu Comets (0-1) with a commanding 58-6 victory. In front of 1,577 enthusiastic fans at Homefield Stadium, the Invaders showcased their offensive firepower and defensive prowess, setting the tone for the rest of the season.
Fast start sets the tone
From the opening kickoff, the Invaders established their dominance. The Comets struggled right out of the gate, with their first punt getting blocked by the Invaders defense. Jannik Consentino scooped up the loose ball and scored the first touchdown of the game, putting Hildesheim ahead 7-0 after kicker Paul Krause converted the extra point. Shortly after, quarterback Nelson Hughes, returning from injury, connected with wide receiver Paul Terjung for an impressive 89-yard touchdown pass, electrifying the crowd and extending the lead to 14-0.
The Invaders defense continued to apply pressure, making it difficult for Allgäu quarterback Brad Jones to find his rhythm. Newcomer Kyle Kitchens was a standout, consistently disrupting plays and forcing the Comets into tough situations. Head coach Marcus Herford praised Kitchens, noting how his presence benefited the entire defense.
Invaders keep the pressure on
After a fumble by Comets running back Frank Haering, the Invaders capitalized quickly. Hughes threw another touchdown pass, this time to Kitchens, making it 21-0. The first quarter ended with a safety after another failed punt by the Comets, pushing the score to 23-0.
The second quarter saw Hildesheim maintain their momentum. Running back Matti Probst scored two touchdowns, first on a 25-yard reception from Hughes and then on a short run, giving the Invaders a commanding 37-0 lead at halftime.
Second half dominance
The Invaders didn’t let up after the break. Hughes scored on a rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 44-0. With the game well in hand, backup quarterback Hendrick Scharnbacher took over and continued to lead the offense effectively.
The Comets managed to score a consolation touchdown in the final quarter with a pass to Gabe Quigley, but their extra point attempt was blocked. The Invaders responded quickly, with Scharnbacher finding Thies Surma for another touchdown. Montrell Jackson capped off the scoring with an interception return for a touchdown, sealing the game at 58-6.
Looking ahead
After the game, head coach Marcus Herford expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but emphasized the need for continued improvement. Quarterback Nelson Hughes was thrilled with his comeback, contributing four touchdown passes and a rushing score. The Invaders now sit atop the GFL North and will face the Regensburg Phoenix in their next matchup, while the Comets will use their bye week to regroup and prepare for upcoming challenges.
