Japan: Obic Seagulls stay unbeaten with defensive win over Nojima Sagamihara Rise

The Obic Seagulls (3-0) remained perfect in the X League Premier season, defeating the Nojima Sagamihara Rise (0-2-1) 17-7 in a defensive battle at Sagamihara Gion Stadium.

Defense dominates early

Neither offense could find much room in the opening half as both defenses controlled the line of scrimmage. The teams traded possessions throughout the first two quarters, sending the game into halftime locked in a scoreless tie.

The Rise defense stood out with two blocked field goals by Naoyuki Saikawa, keeping Obic off the scoreboard despite several promising opportunities.

Holley leads the breakthrough

The deadlock finally ended after halftime.

Quarterback Pierce Holley put the Seagulls on the board with a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Yoshiteru Sadanari, giving Obic a 7-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Rise answered late in the period when quarterback Kurt Palandek connected with Chase Kota on a 35-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7-7 with just 35 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Seagulls finish strong

The fourth quarter belonged to Obic.

Holley delivered his second touchdown pass of the afternoon to restore the lead before Takeji Yamazaki added a 38-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 17-7.

Although Nojima Sagamihara continued to play tough defense, highlighted by Saikawa’s two field-goal blocks, the offense could not find another breakthrough against the disciplined Seagulls defense.

The victory keeps the Obic Seagulls unbeaten through three games and sets up a showdown with the also undefeated Fujitsu Frontiers next round. Meanwhile, the Nojima Sagamihara Rise remains in search of its first win of the season despite another gritty defensive effort.
