OTTAWA — A rematch between the Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa REDBLACKS at TD Place Stadium kicks off a Saturday doubleheader.

Calgary used a 62-yard field goal in the dying seconds to secure a 40-38 win over Ottawa in Week 16 to improve to 6-8.

The loss, the REDBLACKS’ second straight by three points or less, dropped their record to 0-13.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Saturday’s 3:00 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN, RDS2, CTV, and Crave in Canada, as well as on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

CALGARY STAMPEDERS

1. CAN DEONTA MCMAHON BE THE MAN AGAIN?

As running back Dedrick Mills remains on the six-game injured list with a hip injury, rusher Deonta McMahon gets the call again in his place. In his first game of the year last week, he found holes in the REDBLACKS’ front for a career-high 101 yards. With Ottawa sitting last in average rushing yards against with 132.8, McMahon should get plenty more opportunities to make his mark.

2. THE RIGHT LEG OF RENÉ PAREDES

Head coach Dave Dickenson must feel as though his team can score from just about anywhere on the field thanks to his kicker. Not only did René Paredes nail the 62-yard kick for the win in the first matchup, but he’s also 14-for-15 in his four games since returning from injury, giving the offence stability in close games.

3. DON’T OVERTHINK THE DEFENCE

Ottawa receiver Keelan White caught three touchdown passes, and Justin Hardy was targeted 19 times for 129 yards a week ago, giving the Stamps secondary a good place to focus. Defensive backs Zy Alexander and Damon Webb have the task of shutting them down and forcing the REDBLACKS to get more out of their other options.

OTTAWA REDBLACKS

1. MCLEOD BETHEL-THOMPSON

McLeod Bethel-Thompson picked apart the Stampeders secondary for 379 yards and five touchdowns. It’s hard to imagine another similar performance ending in anything but a victory this time around.

2. THE WHEELS OF KALIL PIMPLETON

Known as an electric returner, receiver Kalil Pimpleton is proving he’s so much more, having jumped into the pass game for 44 catches and 552 yards so far this season. Hardy, White and Ayden Eberhardt have shown they can make big plays, and if Pimpleton can join them, it will help the offence keep rolling.

3. GETTING OFF THE FIELD

The REDBLACKS defence is allowing opposing offences to convert at a 57.6 per cent clip on second down. A full team effort is required to get off the field, led by defensive lineman Cleyon Laing up front, linebacker A.J. Allen in the middle and Alonzo Addae deep.

NEED TO KNOW:

Last week’s matchup included 78 points, including 33 in the fourth quarter, with six lead changes and nine offensive touchdowns.
Ottawa has won the teams’ past two meetings at TD Place Stadium.
Vernon Adams Jr. is 7-2 against Ottawa. He passed for 357 yards against them last week – his third 300-yard+ game of the season.
Bethel-Thompson is 4-6 against Calgary. He set a new career-high with five passing TDs last week.
