LIVESTREAM Germany PPV: Kiel Baltic Hurricanes @ Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Aug. 8, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10 am ET)

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (10-0) put their perfect German Football League record on the line Saturday when they welcome the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (2-6) to the OPTIMA Sportpark in an interconference matchup between two of the league’s most established clubs.

The Unicorns have already wrapped up the GFL South title and are coming off a 35-13 road victory over the Straubing Spiders. Kiel, meanwhile, arrives with some badly needed momentum after beating the Berlin Rebels 37-10 for its second victory of the season.

Unicorns keep rolling

There has been little to slow down Schwäbisch Hall this season. The Unicorns have won all 10 games, with their closest calls coming in a 28-23 victory over the Pforzheim Wilddogs and a 38-33 win against the Berlin Rebels.

Quarterback has become an interesting position heading into the final stretch. Julius Klenk has filled in for the injured Lars Heidrich, while the Unicorns have now added Walter Kuhlenkamp following his season with the Danube Dragons in Austria. Heidrich is also expected to return, giving Schwäbisch Hall additional options as the playoffs approach.

Kiel arrives with momentum

The Hurricanes produced their most convincing performance of the season last weekend, pulling away from the Rebels after falling behind 3-0.

PJ Settles threw three touchdown passes, including two to Isaiah Harris, while Lorenz Rotermund and Maximilian Lundahl added rushing scores. The Kiel defense repeatedly turned away Berlin in scoring territory, helping the Hurricanes build a 21-3 halftime advantage.

Settles’ ability to create through the air and with his legs gives the Unicorns defense something to account for Saturday.

Familiar names meet again

It has been nearly nine years since these teams last played, but their history includes some of the GFL’s most memorable postseason meetings.

The Unicorns defeated the Hurricanes in consecutive German Bowls, winning 48-44 in 2011 and 56-53 in 2012. Their most recent meeting came in the 2017 playoffs, when Schwäbisch Hall eliminated Kiel.

This time the circumstances are very different. The Unicorns are preparing for another playoff run, while the Hurricanes are fighting to climb away from the bottom of the GFL North. Saturday will show whether Kiel’s breakthrough against Berlin can carry over against the league’s only remaining unbeaten team.
