Germany: Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns stay unbeaten with convincing win over Munich Cowboys
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (5-0) strengthened their grip on first place in the German Football League South on Sunday, defeating the Munich Cowboys (3-2) 42-14 at OPTIMA Sportpark behind a dominant defensive effort and explosive special teams play.
In front of 1,953 spectators in Schwäbisch Hall, the game remained competitive for much of the first half before the Unicorns pulled away after halftime to remain unbeaten.
Unicorns strike first
The afternoon could not have started better for the Unicorns.
Kelley Joiner returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, immediately giving Schwäbisch Hall a 7-0 lead. From there, both defenses settled in as penalties and missed opportunities disrupted the flow of the game.
The Cowboys managed to move the ball at times, but the Schwäbisch Hall defense consistently came up with stops. A promising Munich drive late in the second quarter ended with a missed 22-yard field goal attempt.
The Unicorns capitalized shortly afterward when Lars Heidrich connected with Rayjuon Pringle for an 18-yard touchdown, sending the home team into halftime with a 14-0 advantage.
Defense takes control
While the offense found its rhythm after the break, the defense laid the foundation for the victory.
The unit repeatedly pressured quarterback Nicholas Semptimphelter, recording four sacks and rarely allowing the Cowboys offense to operate comfortably. Three consecutive Munich possessions in the third quarter ended without a first down as momentum swung completely toward the home side.
Meanwhile, Heidrich and Pringle continued to connect. Pringle hauled in touchdown receptions of 18 and eight yards, while Joiner added a 56-yard touchdown run as the lead ballooned to 35-0.
Special teams deliver the knockout blow
Just when the Cowboys finally found the end zone through Gabriel Boccella, the Unicorns answered immediately.
Pringle returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, his fourth score of the afternoon and the second kickoff return touchdown for Schwäbisch Hall.
Semptimphelter later found Ricardo Knocke for a late touchdown, but the outcome had long since been decided.
Pringle finished with four touchdowns, while Joiner contributed two scores as the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns improved to 5-0 and maintained their lead atop the German Football League South standings.
