Switzerland: Calanda Broncos continue march through Swiss league

The Calanda Broncos notched their fifth straight win Saturday defeating the Basel Gladiators 47-21  at home in Chur in front of a crowd of just under 1,000 to remain unbeaten in Switzerland’s National League.

Broncos quarterback Clark Evans threw two touchdown passes and ran for two to pace Calanda. Running back Tino Muggwyler added two touchdowns in the win. Lukas Lütscher and Nathanael Fellberius each caught a touchdown pass and Ramon Hutter kicked five extra points.

Evans leads the Swiss league with 18 touchdown passes while also recording six rushing touchdowns.

The Broncos took a 28-0 first half lead behind the two touchdown passes from Evans and Muggwyler’s two touchdowns before Basel found the scoreboard right before the half. Gladiators quarterback Perry Patterson, under constant pressure, struggled in the first half and was picked off once.

Basel settled down early in the third quarter scoring again to pull closer 28-14, but Evans restored the three-score lead with a touchdown of his own giving Calanda a 35-14 lead. Basel responded to close the gap to 35-21, but the Broncos then kicked into a higher gear. Evans scored his second touchdown of the game and defensive back Adrian Filli put the game away with a 100 yard interception return for a touchdown.

After five games the Broncos sit atop the standings in Switzerland and have scored 213 points while giving up 96.
