Germany: Pforzheim Wilddogs edge Cowboys 14-7 to keep playoff hopes alive

The Pforzheim Wilddogs (7-3) kept their postseason hopes firmly alive Saturday, leaning on a dominant defensive performance to defeat the Munich Cowboys (5-4) 14-7 in a tense German Football League battle before more than 800 fans at KRAMSKI Arena.

Ground game sets the tone

The game developed into a defensive struggle from the opening kickoff, with Pforzheim relying heavily on its rushing attack. Quarterback Drequan Harris and running backs Theo Michel and Bryan Yankson carried much of the workload as the Wilddogs kept the clock moving and avoided taking unnecessary risks through the air.

The Cowboys moved the ball effectively on their opening drive behind quarterback Nicholas Semptimphelter, but the Wilddogs defense answered with back-to-back sacks by Michi Grünes and Antonio Alzheimer to force an early punt.

Teams trade second-quarter scores

The breakthrough finally came midway through the second quarter. Harris finished off a 14-play, 96-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run on third-and-three, and Luca Hirschberger’s extra point gave the Wilddogs a 7-0 lead.

The Cowboys answered in the closing seconds of the half. Semptimphelter capped a four-play, 79-yard drive by connecting with Gabriel Boccella on a 62-yard touchdown strike with 36 seconds remaining before halftime. Maximilian Mittasch added the extra point to send the teams into the locker room tied 7-7.

Defense makes the difference

Neither offense found much room after halftime as both defenses continued to control the line of scrimmage.

A blocked Munich punt gave the Wilddogs outstanding field position to open the second half. Harris needed only one play, keeping the ball himself on a 10-yard touchdown run, and Hirschberger’s extra point restored the Pforzheim lead at 14-7.

The Cowboys mounted one final drive behind Semptimphelter and Boccella, reaching the Pforzheim 9-yard line before the Wilddogs produced a remarkable goal-line stand, stopping Munich just four yards from the end zone.

Wilddogs finish the job

The drama wasn’t over. After Pforzheim missed a field goal that could have extended the lead, the Cowboys got one final possession with just over two minutes remaining.

Linebacker David Graf sealed the victory by intercepting Semptimphelter with 1:57 left, allowing the Wilddogs to run out the clock and secure one of their biggest wins of the season.

The victory keeps Pforzheim in second place in the GFL South standings and preserves its hopes of hosting a playoff game, while the defense delivered when it mattered most in a contest where every yard was hard-earned.
