AFLE: Rhein Fire edge Berlin Thunder in German derby thriller
The Rhein Fire (3-1) survived a fierce challenge from the Berlin Thunder (2-3), pulling away late for a 45-36 victory in an entertaining American Football League Europe German derby that featured nearly 1,000 yards of total offense.
What many expected to be a comfortable win for Rhein Fire instead became one of the most competitive games of the season, with the Thunder matching the hosts blow for blow for almost four quarters.
Offenses take center stage
Neither defense found a consistent answer as both offenses piled up yards throughout the afternoon.
Quarterback Kenji Bahar was outstanding for the Fire, completing 18 of 26 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. His favorite targets were Kaylon Geiger and Harlan Kwofie, who repeatedly stretched the Berlin secondary. Geiger finished with five catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard score, while Kwofie added eight receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown.
The Thunder were just as dangerous offensively. Jakeb Sullivan completed 26 of 39 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball effectively to Jon Cole, Bais Kouanda and Niklas Schumm. Cole hauled in 11 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown, while Kouanda added seven receptions for 50 yards and two scores.
Ground game keeps Berlin close
The Berlin rushing attack was a major factor throughout the game. Tomiwa Oyewo provided explosive plays, rushing for 83 yards on just five carries, including a 57-yard burst. Kai Hunter added 58 yards and two rushing touchdowns as the Thunder piled up 161 yards on the ground.
But the Fire answered with an even stronger rushing performance. Jonathan Scott carried the load with 130 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, helping the hosts finish with 210 rushing yards.
Decisive moments
For all of Berlin’s success, one turnover proved costly. Sullivan threw his only interception of the afternoon at a critical stage, giving Rhein valuable field position. Combined with seven penalties and a pass rush that produced four sacks, the small mistakes ultimately added up for the visitors.
Scott delivers the knockout blow
The game remained in doubt until the final minutes. With just over two minutes remaining and the margin sitting at only two points, Scott powered into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the day.
That score finally created enough separation for the Fire, who escaped with a hard-fought 45-36 victory.
The win keeps Rhein firmly in control of the North West Conference race, while the Berlin Thunder head into their bye week after proving they can compete with one of the league’s top teams.
