Danube Dragons overcome early deficit, clinch AFL regular-season title with rout of Salzburg Ducks

The Danube Dragons (8-1) recovered from an early two-touchdown deficit to defeat the Salzburg Ducks (2-7) 52-21 Sunday at the Ducks Pond, securing first place in the Austrian Football League regular-season standings and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The victory guarantees the defending champions the top seed thanks to their tiebreaker advantage over the Prague Black Panthers.

Ducks stun Dragons early

The afternoon could not have started much better for the home side.

Quarterback Gavin Sukup energized the crowd by scoring two rushing touchdowns in the opening minutes, helping the Salzburg Ducks race to a surprising 14-0 lead.

The Danube Dragons briefly looked unsettled, but they quickly found their footing. Quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp got the visitors on the board by connecting with Uzay Nafile for a touchdown, cutting the deficit and shifting momentum toward Danube.

Dragons take control before halftime

The second quarter belonged to the visitors.

Michael Zeiler powered into the end zone to level the score before Paul Schachner delivered one of the game’s biggest plays, returning a punt for a touchdown and giving the Dragons their first lead of the afternoon.

Kuhlenkamp continued to pick apart the defense, finding Nafile for his second touchdown reception of the game as the Danube offense hit full stride.

The Ducks answered before halftime when Sukup connected with Pavo Lukač for a touchdown, but the visitors still carried a 28-21 lead into the break.

Nafile leads second-half surge

After halftime, the game became one-sided.

Kuhlenkamp and Nafile hooked up for a third touchdown, completing a huge day for the receiver. Moments later, an interception by Matthias Rebl gave the Dragons another short field.

The visitors took full advantage. Samuel Imarhiagbe hauled in his first touchdown reception of the game, and Zeiler added his second rushing score as Danube stretched the lead to 49-21 by the end of the third quarter.

Top seed secured

With the outcome no longer in doubt, the Dragons rotated in backup players during the fourth quarter. Marcel Stefanek added a field goal to complete the scoring and finish off a dominant comeback victory.

After spotting the Salzburg Ducks a 14-0 lead, the Danube Dragons scored 52 of the game’s final 59 points, wrapping up the regular-season title and cementing themselves as the team to beat heading into the AFL playoffs.
