Austria: Vienna Knights claim historic derby victory over AFC Vienna Vikings
The Vienna Knights (6-1) strengthened their grip on first place in the Austrian Football League this past weekend, rallying from a halftime deficit to defeat the AFC Vienna Vikings (3-4) 21-14 in the first AFL derby meeting between the two Vienna clubs at Helfortplatz.
The victory was another remarkable chapter in what has already become a dream season for the newly promoted Knights, who continued their surprising rise to the top of the league standings.
Knights start fast
The home team wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.
Quarterback Chad Jeffries capped the opening drive with a rushing touchdown to give the Knights an early 7-0 lead and energize the crowd.
The Vikings responded immediately. Quarterback Michael Szabo connected with Rudolf Lee Frey and Jordan David Kress for touchdown passes as the visitors erased the early deficit and took a 14-7 lead into halftime.
At that point, the experienced Vikings appeared to have seized control of the derby.
Defense changes the game
Everything shifted after the break.
The Knights defense delivered a dominant second-half performance, shutting out the Vikings offense and preventing any comeback opportunities.
While the defense tightened its grip on the game, the offense found its rhythm. Simon Kalkhofer hauled in a touchdown reception to pull the Knights level before Jeffries once again made an impact with his legs, scoring the go-ahead touchdown.
The two scores completed the turnaround and put the home side in front for good.
Knights finish the job
The Vikings continued to battle, but costly mistakes and a loss of offensive momentum made it difficult to regain control of the game.
Any hopes of a late rally ended when Elias Ferchl came up with a game-clinching interception.
The turnover sealed a memorable 21-14 victory for the Vienna Knights, who improved to 6-1 and continued their incredible run at the top of the AFL standings.
For the AFC Vienna Vikings, the loss dropped them to 3-4 despite a strong first half. For the Vienna Knights, it was another statement win and a historic derby triumph in front of their home supporters in Vienna.
