Finland: Kuopio Steelers rally past Roosters to claim road win in Maple League

The Kuopio Steelers (2-1) overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Helsinki Roosters (0-3) 26-15 on the road in the Finnish Maple League, capitalizing on key defensive plays and timely execution to leave Käpylä Velodrome with two valuable points.

The visitors trailed 15-13 at the break despite being outgained throughout the night, but made the most of their opportunities after halftime while the Helsinki offense repeatedly came up just short in crucial moments.

First-half frustration

The Roosters looked much improved in their first home game of the season with newcomers D’Angelo Durham, Corintheus Edmonds and Zach Wright all making their debuts. Head coach Lasse Voipio finally had a roster close to full strength, missing only Christer Berg from his preferred starting lineup.

Despite controlling the game statistically, Helsinki couldn’t turn long drives into enough points. Durham appeared headed for a touchdown after an impressive run but fumbled just half a yard from the goal line. Anssi Ruohonen also missed two field-goal attempts before halftime, leaving the home side with only a slim 15-13 advantage.

Rene Rautiainen led the passing attack with nine receptions from quarterback Ambro Urjansson, while Aku Kattainen and Taavi Aronpää stood out defensively. Santtu Jääskeläinen also contributed a safety after tackling Romello Herbin in the end zone.

Steelers finish when it mattered

The second half belonged to the Steelers, whose defense delivered the game’s biggest momentum swing. Edmonds lost the ball just inches from the goal line, with Romello Herbin recovering the fumble to deny another scoring chance.

Quarterback Slade Jarman didn’t put up flashy numbers but delivered in key situations. Daniel Rubinstein, named the game’s most outstanding player, hauled in two big receptions and scored one touchdown. The visitors also found the end zone through Jarman, Tuukka Lehtonen and Herbin.

Christopher Cox paced the Kuopio defense with eight tackles, continuing his strong start to the season, while Lars Steffen remained the Maple League’s tackles leader.

The Steelers may have lost the yardage battle 437-265, but they were far more efficient when scoring opportunities appeared. The victory moved Kuopio into the group of teams with multiple wins, while the Roosters remained winless despite showing clear signs of improvement with their revamped lineup.
