Paris Lights edge Alpine Rams in dramatic Battle of the Border

The Paris Lights (2-2) escaped with a dramatic 23-22 victory over the Alpine Rams (1-3), surviving a bruising back-and-forth battle and relying on a late field goal from Boris Bede to secure a crucial road win in the American Football League Europe.

The result capped one of the most physical games of the season and left the Rams wondering what might have been after pushing the visitors to the final seconds.

Paris strikes first

The opening half was a grind, with both defenses making every yard difficult to earn.

Paris got on the board first when quarterback Evan Hillock found Jens Walter for the game’s opening touchdown. Walter finished with four catches for 52 yards and a score, providing the biggest receiving threat for the visitors.

The Lights then leaned heavily on running back Armand Soulerot, who carried the ball 23 times for 73 yards and a touchdown. Combined with Sanka Moukouri’s 59 rushing yards, Paris controlled the ground game and finished with 146 rushing yards.

Special teams spark the Rams

The Alpine response came from several directions.

Former NFL tight end Jared Scott made an immediate impact in his first game with the Rams, catching three passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, including a 50-yard reception that energized the home crowd.

Special teams then shifted momentum. Brayan Carbonell blocked a punt, and Nickson Massa returned it for a touchdown to put the Rams right back into the game. A later blocked field goal return appeared headed for another score before being called back by a penalty.

Behind quarterback Seth Morgan, the Rams continued to battle. Morgan completed 17 of 25 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the team in rushing with 58 yards. Kevin Kaya added a touchdown reception as Alpine kept pace throughout the afternoon.

Defense delivers

A key turning point came in the second half when Paris defensive end Valentin Gnahoua intercepted a Morgan pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown.

The Lights defense also came up with a huge fourth-down stop near the goal line, with Tiberio Calbucci playing a major role in slowing the Alpine running game.

Bede has the final word

Despite fighting until the final whistle, the Rams could not quite finish the comeback.

With only seven seconds remaining, Boris Bede delivered the winning points, booting a 44 yard field goal to give the Paris Lights a hard-earned 23-22 victory and send them into their bye week with momentum.

For the Alpine Rams, the narrow defeat was painful, but their performance showed they remain capable of competing with anyone in the league.
