UFL: Houston Gamblers pull off upset victory over Battlehawks
The Houston Gamblers (3-5) pulled off a stunning upset against the St. Louis Battlehawks (5-3), winning 23-16 at the Battledome. This victory handed the Battlehawks their first home loss of the United Football League season and kept the Gamblers‘ playoff hopes alive.
First Half Highlights
The game started with St. Louis seizing early momentum. After the Gamblers opened with a three-and-out, Sean Fesch flipped the field with a 50-yard punt return, setting up the Battlehawks in the red zone. Ramiz Ahmed converted a 32-yard field goal, giving St. Louis a quick 3-0 lead.
However, Houston responded with a methodical drive led by quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who completed all six of his passes for 58 yards, culminating in a four-yard touchdown pass to Jontre Kirklin. The Gamblers took a 7-3 lead, and things got even better for them when Kary Vincent Jr. intercepted Battlehawks quarterback Luis Perez and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 14-3.
St. Louis managed to respond with a 13-play drive, but once again, they stalled in the red zone. Ahmed added another field goal, cutting the deficit to 14-6. Before halftime, Houston struck again with an explosive drive, capped off by a 35-yard touchdown pass from Dekkers to Lawrence Keys, giving the Gamblers a commanding 20-6 lead.
Struggles for St. Louis
The first half was a struggle for the Battlehawks, who went just 1-for-6 on third downs and 0-for-3 in the red zone. They committed eight penalties and totaled only 123 yards of offense, marking the largest halftime deficit they had ever faced at home.
The second half began with St. Louis trying to find their rhythm. Perez connected with Steven McBride for a 29-yard gain, but another red zone trip ended in disappointment when Ahmed missed a 29-yard field goal attempt. Meanwhile, Houston continued to operate efficiently, extending their lead to 23-9 with a 37-yard field goal from John Hoyland.
Battlehawks Fight Back
Despite the struggles, the Battlehawks refused to give up. After forcing a Gamblers three-and-out, Perez finally found his rhythm. A drive sparked by Blake Jackson’s 29-yard catch-and-run culminated in a touchdown pass to Tyler Neville, narrowing the gap to 23-16.
The energy in the Battledome surged as St. Louis clawed back. Pita Taumoepenu’s second sack of the day helped force another Houston three-and-out, giving the Battlehawks one last chance with two minutes remaining.
Final Moments
In a dramatic finish, Perez connected with McBride for a 33-yard gain, quickly moving St. Louis into Houston territory. However, a costly holding penalty turned a promising drive into a 4th-and-19 situation. After a defensive holding penalty kept the drive alive, Perez completed a pass to McBride, but time expired at the two-yard line.
Houston survived the late-game surge and secured one of the biggest upsets of the UFL season. Dekkers threw for two touchdowns, while Ameer Speed led the Gamblers defensively with nine tackles. For St. Louis, Taumoepenu dominated with seven tackles and two sacks, while McBride had a standout performance with seven catches for 104 yards.
With this loss, the Battlehawks missed a chance to clinch a postseason berth. The two teams will meet again next Sunday in Houston, setting the stage for another exciting showdown.
