Germany’s Samsung Frankfurt Universe sign top division I QB Steve Cluley

The Frankfurt Universe and new head coach Brian Caler have already been busy recruiting and they have signed quarterback Steve Cluley for the 2018 season.

The 24 year old, 6’3″, 215 lb native of Manasquan, New Jersey, was a three year starter at William & Mary (NCAA Div. I) in Williamsburg, Virginia where he was one of the most productive quarterbacks in school history. He finished his career in 2016 with 35 consecutive starts, and ranked among the program’s top-10 in seven categories – sixth in passing yards (6,864), sixth in total offense (7,128), fourth in passing attempts (959), third in passing completions (577), tied for fifth in completion percentage (60.2), eighth in passing touchdowns (39) and seventh in 200-yard passing performances (16).

Cluley’s best season with the Tribe came during his junior campaign when he earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors after completing 222 of 354 passes for 2,768 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His 212.9 passing yards per game ranked second in the CAA, while his completion percentage (.627) led the conference and ranked 20th nationally.

Cluley owns the single-game school record for completion percentage (91.3), which he set against Towson in 2015 when he completed 21 of 23 passes. Additionally, he posted a pair of impressive stretches of 176 and 138 consecutive passing attempts without an interception. He attended New York Giants mini camp earlier this year.

Brian Caler:

“In Steve Cluley we have gained an extremely talented player. He has exactly what we expect from an import QB. In addition to his qualities in the field, he will support us a lot in the development of his teammates and I am very pleased to work together with him to build our offense.”

Cluley spoke with the Universe:

“I had great talks with [defensive coordinator] Coach Kösling. I already had contact with Europe last year, when I was preparing for the tryout in the NFL. The perspectives in Frankfurt and the philosophy of the Samsung Frankfurt Universe convinced me relatively quickly to come to Hesse to get a championship with the team. The Frankfurt Universe name is known even in the States because of the great history of this club. It quickly became clear to me that I would like to be part of this history, also because some players I know have only said good things about the level of play in the GFL and Samsung Frankfurt Universe. I am an extremely ambitious person. I always want the best of myself and expect the same from the people around me. I’m really looking forward to meeting my teammates and achieving great things with them.”

The Universe reached the German Football League semifinals in 2017 but were eliminated by the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions in a thriller 23-21
